Application Fees and Licence Charges

Overview of application fees and licence charges for work with some genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Overview

As the gene technology sector has significantly evolved since the commencement of the National Gene Technology Scheme in 2001, the Australian Government has provided funding through the 2026-2027 Budget to implement a sustainable funding model for the National Gene Technology Scheme, including the phased introduction of cost recovery arrangements. Therefore, the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) will collect fees and charges for the regulatory activities under the Gene Technology Act 2000 and the Gene Technology (Licence Charges) Act 2000.

Cost Recovery Implementation Statement

The Gene Technology Regulator has prepared a draft Cost Recovery Implementation Statement (CRIS) to ensure transparency and accountability for the level of charging and to demonstrate that the purpose for charging is being achieved. The draft CRIS and supporting documents outline cost recovery activities, how fees and charges are calculated, timelines and how stakeholders can provide their feedback.

Consultation on the OGTR’s draft CRIS is now open.

The OGTR welcomes your feedback.

Please provide your comments on the content of the draft CRIS via consultation hub or email: ogtr.costrecovery@health.gov.au. Consultation closes COB Friday 13 November 2026.

Note: No personally identifying information will be released as part of your submission. Deidentified submission summaries will be included in the finalised CRIS. Your personal information is protected by law, including the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles. More information about OGTR’s privacy policy can be found on our website.
