Genetically modified (GM) safflower in Australia
Safflower has been commercially cultivated as a minor crop in Australia since the 1950s.
The first commercial GM safflower was released in Australia in 2018. It is grown for the edible oil and industrial oil markets. After oil is extracted from the seed, the remaining meal can be used as a stockfeed. Alternatively, the whole safflower seeds are used for birdseed.
