Commercial release of herbicide tolerant (Roundup Ready Flex®MON88913) pima cotton in Australia

Licence details

Licence number:
DIR 118
Licence status:

Monsanto Australia Ltd

Parent organism:

Cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.)

Modified trait:

Herbicide tolerance

Licence issue date:

This licence allows Monsanto Australia Ltd to commence the commercial release of herbicide tolerant pima cotton in Australia. Roundup Ready Flex® pima cotton contains two copies of a gene from a common soil bacterium conferring tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate. Conventional breeding was used to transfer the genetic modification from GM Roundup Ready Flex® G. hirsutum to pima cotton. The purpose of the release is to allow the commercial cultivation of the GM cotton. The GM cotton is allowed to be grown in all cotton growing areas in Australia, subject to restrictions in some Australian States and Territories for marketing reasons.

The Regulator has not imposed any specific measures to manage risk, as the risk assessment concluded that this release of GM cotton poses negligible risks to the health and safety of people or the environment. However, general conditions have been imposed to ensure that there is ongoing oversight of the release.

The risk analysis for this application was carried out in accordance with the Regulator’s Risk Analysis Framework.
