Prior to the National Aged Care Workforce Census and Survey, the level of knowledge about workers in aged care has been remarkably limited. No single data source provided an accurate picture of direct care employment in residential aged care facilities in Australia, especially not the kind that would inform complex workforce planning.

To rectify this gap in our knowledge, the Department of Health and Ageing, acting on behalf of the Aged Care Workforce Committee, commissioned a census and survey of aged care facilities and their employees.

The objective of the Census and Survey is to help industry identify the workforce profile of the aged care sector and to assist the industry in planning future directions and needs. It will enable better planning to meet the future demand for aged care nurses and other paid care workers with the appropriate skills and qualifications to meet residents' care needs.

The Census involved all Commonwealth funded residential aged care facilities, together with a Survey of 6,199 of the direct care workers whom they employ.

The Report produced by NILS for the Census and Survey was titled "The Care of Older Australians A Picture of the Residential Aged Care Workforce"
